Birmingham City open talks to sign Grant Hanley – sources

Birmingham City have opened talks with Norwich City about a deal to sign defender Grant Hanley, sources have told Football Insider.

The League One leaders are working on a deal to sign the 33-year-old as they target a late-window centre-back signing.

Norwich are open to letting Hanley go before the 3 February transfer deadline with the club captain making just three appearances in the Championship this term.

Birmingham are eyeing reinforcements at the back as they fight the likes of Wycombe and Wrexham for automatic promotion to the second tier.

Hanley’s contract at Carrow Road is set to run until the end of the 2024-25 campaign, potentially ending his eight-year association with Norwich.

He has made just four appearances this term and has started in only two of those outings.

The 33-year-old remains a regular for Scotland and started in all six of their Nations League fixtures in the second half of 2024.

Norwich willing to let Birmingham target Hanley go

Hanley is immensely experienced at Championship level, turning out 295 times in the second tier as well as racking up 79 Premier League outings.

The Dumfries-born defender is a three-time Championship winner with Norwich and Newcastle.
