Birmingham City place Mark Venus on gardening leave to leave Tony Mowbray’s future in new doubt – sources

Birmingham City assistant manager Mark Venus has been placed on gardening leave by the club to throw Tony Mowbray’s future into new doubt, sources have told Football Insider.

Venus, 56, had recently stepped up to take charge of the club while manager Mowbray received medical treatment.

Mowbray temporarily stepped away from on-site management in February to receive medical care, leaving Venus in charge of the day-to-day running of the club.

Gary Rowett has since taken the Birmingham hot seat after being hired as an interim manager earlier this month (19 March).

Following Rowett’s arrival, Venus also took a leave of absence and planned to return to the club at the same time as Mowbray.

Sources say that Venus has since left his role and begun a period of gardening leave.

Birmingham City refused to comment on the matter on Wednesday after being contacted by Football Insider.

Venus has worked closely with Mowbray since joining his backroom staff at Hibernian in 2004.

He joined Mowbray as his assistant manager at the Scottish outfit and has also worked as his right-hand man at West Brom, Celtic, Middlesbrough, Coventry City, Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland.

Mowbray then joined Birmingham in January 2024 and Venus once again joined the 60-year-old’s coaching staff at St Andrew’s.
