Former Leeds United star Noel Whelan has been buzzing over the imminent return of current Whites hitman Kemar Roofe to the side ahead of the club’s clash against Ipswich.
The former Elland Road favourite exclusively told Football lnsider that he was expecting the striker to head straight back into the starting XI after his recent absence through injury, his return coinciding with Patrick Bamford’s two match ban for simulation against Aston Villa.
With the trip to Portman Road the club’s last league game before the play-offs, Whelan expects that Roofe will have a point to prove versus the already relegated Tractor Men and that he will be looking to recapture his goal scoring record which sees him top the charts under Marcelo Bielsa.
“I think Kemar Roofe has a point to prove, seeing as he’s come back from injury,” Whelan told Football Insider in an exclusive interview.
“I know he’s not had much game time but let’s be honest, the times he has come on, you need to find that form again and find that little bit of spark that he had before he got injured.
“I know it’s difficult when you come back after an injury to try and recapture that form straight away, it does take a couple of games, couple of weeks to get that match sharpness again and confidence. As a striker, you work off confidence, it’s a confidence position – he’s now got a great opportunity to cement his place back again that’s been given to him by Patrick Bamford’s stupidness on the field.
“Now it’s passed to Kemar Roofe, to go to Ipswich, to Portman Road, to a relegated side to hopefully bang a couple of goals in and get that momentum, that belief, that confidence a striker needs back into his game. He’s still top scorer at Leeds United, he’s got a chance here to extend that.”
Roofe, 26, has spent two notable spells out on the sidelines through injury this season but has still managed to find the back of the net 14 times in his 31 Championship appearances for Bielsa’s side.
