Bournemouth are on the brink of 36-year record ahead of Brighton clash

Bournemouth are on the verge of completing a feat that no other top-flight club has managed since Arsenal at the beginning of the 1989-90 season.

After encountering plenty of changes in the summer transfer window, Bournemouth were beaten 4-2 by Liverpool in their opening Premier League fixture.

Since then, though, the Cherries have successfully maintained clean sheets in consecutive victories over Wolves and Tottenham.

No top-flight team have kept three consecutive clean sheets immediately after conceding four goals in their opening match since Arsenal in 1989.

Bournemouth on the brink of becoming third club to achieve historic feat

While the English transfer window has closed, Bournemouth have confirmed the sale of Zain Silcott-Duberry to Greek club Olympiacos.

Meanwhile, Andoni Iraola’s men host Brighton in their next Premier League game on Saturday, 13 September.

If Iraola’s backline maintain a clean sheet against the Seagulls, as seen in Bournemouth’s win over Tottenham, they will become the third top-flight side in top-flight history to maintain three consecutive clean sheets immediately after conceding four goals in their first match.

Before Arsenal did that in 1989, Burnley achieved the same feat back in the early exchanges of the 1895-96 campaign.

Andoni Iraola’s defence have performed remarkably following high-profile exits

Iraola endured a somewhat difficult transfer window, as Milos Kerkez joined Liverpool, whereas Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi moved to Real Madrid and PSG, respectively.

Bournemouth have earned two wins this term

Those changes left Bournemouth without three of last season’s back-four, leading to fears that they may not be able to perform well in the Premier League this term, having landed a top-half spot in 2024/25.

The Dorset outfit appeared defensively weak when they were beaten 4-2 by Liverpool on 15 August, but subsequent worries have been eased by their strong showings against Wolves and Tottenham.

While Iraola’s men sit on the brink of a historic feat, their clean sheets against the Molineux club and Spurs were a testament to the performances of new defenders Adrien Truffert and Bafode Diakite.

If Bournemouth maintain a clean sheet against Brighton and earn a third consecutive win, they appear in good standing to enjoy another successful Premier League season.
