Brendan Rodgers: Celtic open defender talks ahead of January window

By Will Butcher

Brendan Rodgers has revealed Celtic are discussing the renewal of Mikael Lustig’s contract.

The 29-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer, and Rodgers told the Daily Record that the Hoops are talking to the Sweden international’s agent over a new deal.

“Mikael’s one I definitely want to keep and the club are in discussions with his representatives,” Rodgers said.“He’s an important player for us, one of the pillars of the group.

“He’s a great character, motivated to train and a great professional. Mikael’s a fun guy but he knows when to focus. He’s a Scott Brown type in the dressing-room.

“He’s been excellent since I came in and I think he wants to stay.”

Playing either at right-back or in the middle of Rodgers’ defence this season, Lustig has made 27 league and cup appearances for the 47-time Scottish champions. He has missed just three games for Rodgers’ side all season.

Known for his impressive aerial ability, Lustig continues to be a vital part of Sweden’s national team after representing them 55 times since his debut in 2008 against USA.

Since his move from Norwegian giants Rosenborg, Lustig has made 161 league and cup appearances in Glasgow and has scored 13 times.

He is expected to feature for the Hoops on Tuesday night, as Rodgers’ side host Hamilton in the Scottish Premiership. A win for the Hoops could see them go 11 points clear, with Rangers not in action until Friday.

In other Celtic news, this midfielder could also be set to enter talks as Rodgers looks to conduct a January move.
