Brendan Rodgers exit ‘murmurs’ could be about to grow at Celtic – Keith Wyness

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed there will be “murmurs” about Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers if they get a “thumping” against Atalanta.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Hoops must show a “cohesive” defensive display after leaking goals in recent weeks.

Celtic travel to Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday (23 October) after collapsing to a 2-2 draw in the Scottish Premiership against Aberdeen on Saturday (19 October).

The Parkhead club have lost just one game this season – a 7-1 demolition away at Borussia Dortmund earlier this month.

Rodgers’ side have shipped 14 goals in 12 games so far in the 2024-25 campaign.

‘Pressure is building’ at Celtic over goals conceded, says Wyness

Wyness insisted the Hoops’ leaky defence is a “big problem”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There’s no doubt they will be concerned about conceding goals.

“The two against Aberdeen will have been more worrying than getting a thrashing in Europe.

“Atalanta becomes a big game for Brendan Rodgers in terms of showing that he can get Celtic cohesive defensively.

“It’s a big problem. Almost losing 3-2 against Aberdeen, with a late VAR check chalking off the goal – it’s a concern, it would’ve been incredible.

“Brendan has got to get this right.

Celtic

“Atalanta becomes a big game. If they are to get a thumping, there will be a lot of murmurs about Rodgers – even though Celtic are top of the league.

“The pressure on Brendan will start to build again.”
