Brendan Rodgers delivers troubling Celtic update ahead of Zenit Europa clash

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has stated that the Hoops performance versus Partick Thistle in the Scottish Cup yesterday was not good enough to beat Zenit.
The Russian outfit travel to Parkhead on thursday to play the first leg of their Europa League tie, but the former Liverpool gaffer does not believe the 3-2 win yesterday demonstrated the quality needed to beat Zenit.
Speaking in a press conference, as quoted by BT Sport, Rodgers stated that he thinks the occasion will get the best out of his players.
“We will clearly need to play better than we did on Saturday but hopefully the occasion brings that performance up.”
“We have a lot of players missing with injuries but it’s two really exciting games for us and the first leg here on Thursday should be a fantastic game,” Rodgers added.
Zenit represent a challenge not often taken on by the Hoops, as the Bhoys have been dominating the Scottish Premier League since Rodgers arrival.
This European test will be an eye opening one for the players, but Rodgers thinks that they are looking forward to it.
“We’ve qualified for this phase and now we want to maximise where we can go in this competition.”
“That was the aim right from the start of this season, the next step for this group. We’ll get ready for that over the next few days and look forward to it.”
Celtic’s Champions League group made it all but impossible to reach the next stages of that competition, having drawn both PSG and Bayern Munich.
Yet the Hoops can still look forward to a run in Europe, should they rise to the occasion and see off Zenit.
