Brendan Rodgers told to sign new goalkeeper after what Celtic expert has seen

Brendan Rodgers needs to assess the goalkeeper position at Celtic.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie said the Celts’ loss in their opening pre-season match in Japan will answer a lot of questions for the new manager.

The Hoops are currently in Japan as part of their pre-season tour and faced Daizen Maeda’s former club Yokohoma F Marinos on Wednesday (19 July).

Rodgers’ side were beaten 6-4 in the first game of their Asia trip but went on to win 1-0 against Gamba Osaka on Saturday (22 July).

McAvennie insisted the result is not worrying but will help Rodgers learn more about his squad.

It was a very young team, I think it will do them good.

They made a few mistakes at the back which will show Brendan that Joe [Hart] is not up to speed. I saw a couple of things that Joe could have done better and he will want to assess that.

The Japanese teams are deep into their season and it will take a wee while for Celtic to get back playing.

Celtic

I have always said they are decent going forward, they can score goals. The fitness was good and it was good for the Japanese boys to get to play over there.

This time normally they are approaching the qualifying rounds so it is a big change but a chance for Brendan to see the players he has got to work with.

In other news, Portsmouth and Bristol Rovers make moves to sign Celtic star.
