Brennan Johnson’s Crystal Palace future could already be on the line as Wales eye World Cup glory
Brennan Johnson has failed to convince the majority of Crystal Palace supporters since his £35million move from Tottenham Hotspur.
The 24-year-old has fallen behind Ismaila Sarr and Evann Guessand in the pecking order, so much so that Oliver Glasner has decided to move him to a wing-back role at Selhurst Park in recent weeks.
He has just two assists in 16 appearances, picking up more yellow cards than goal contributions, and fans are already losing patience with the big-money Welshman, just two months into his transfer.
Johnson could find himself on Palace’s transfer list once the summer transfer window rolls around, but he does have a huge chance to prove himself away from the Eagles over the coming weeks.
Brennan Johnson still has room to improve at Crystal Palace
Johnson has been called up to Craig Bellamy’s Wales squad, unsurprisingly, ahead of at least one crucial international game, with Wales still vying for a spot at the 2026 World Cup.
First up is Bosnia & Herzegovina at the Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday, 26 March, with the winner of the semi-final facing either Northern Ireland or Italy in the World Cup play-off final.
The winger has also had a mixed career on the international stage, never really being able to get out of Gareth Bale’s shadow, even after the legendary figure’s retirement from football.
| Brennan Johnson’s Premier League 2025-26 season | Stats [FotMob] |
| Minutes played | 1231 |
| Goals | Assists | 2 | 1 |
| Shots on target | 5 |
| Chances created (Big chances) | 14 (1) |
| Successful crosses | 23.5% |
| Successful dribbles | 30% |
| Duels won | 46.5% |
| Yellow cards | 5 |
With seven goals and five assists, three of which came in 2025, Wales fans have been expecting a lot more from the former Tottenham ace, especially against the calibre of opponent they’ve faced.
The international stage can offer £35million flop reprieve
The game against Bosnia & Herzegovina will be the perfect opportunity for the young winger to prove why Glasner and Palace splashed £35million on his signature during the winter window.
If he can make a positive impact in that game, he’ll have the chance to put Wales on his back and carry them to the 2026 World Cup, rather than the team relying so heavily on Fulham’s Harry Wilson.
His last game in front of the Red Wall was probably his best so far, scoring and assisting in a 7-1 thumping of North Macedonia, which is exactly what fans have been desperate to see.
Should he fail to impress during the international break, there might already be serious concerns over his future at Selhurst Park, with the winger really struggling to find a foothold at the club.
What is obvious is that Glasner cannot continue with Johnson experimenting at full-back.
