Brennan Johnson wows, Mathys Tel dismal – Tottenham player ratings in Ipswich win

Ange Postecoglou will be ecstatic with his side’s performance as Tottenham secured a 4-1 win over Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Spurs raced into a two-goal lead after just 26 minutes, with Brennan Johnson and Son Heung-min combining twice to ease some of the pressure building on Postecoglou at Tottenham.

Omari Hutchinson did his best to spark a comeback, firing past Guglielmo Vicario just 10 minutes later, but it was not enough to save the Tractor Boys from their 15th defeat of the league campaign.

The Lilywhites, on the other hand, managed to rise to 12th in the Premier League table, boasting back-to-back defeats for the first time in the league since September.

Ange Postecoglou earns breathing space with back-to-back wins

Here’s how Football Insider rated the performance of each Tottenham player following their clash with Ipswich.

Guglielmo Vicario – 6

Could do little about the goal but saved his team on several occasions before Spurs ran out 4-1 victors at Portman Road.

Djed Spence – 8

Having been frozen out of the squad by Postecoglou, it has been an incredible resurgence at Tottenham for Spence, who finally bagged his first-ever goal for the club.

Archie Gray – 6

Struggled at times but has looked more assured with Danso by his side at the centre of defence. The 18-year-old continues to deputise well out of position.

Kevin Danso – 7

Yet another stable performance from the new signing, having helped sure up the defence against Man United last time out. Looking to be quite the purchase.

Destiny Udogie (Off for Pedro Porro 65′) – 5

Looks to be easy back into things, having only just returned from a long spell on the sidelines. Didn’t push himself too hard but remained strong on the ball.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 7

A fine display in the middle of the park from Bentancur, keeping Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr stuck on the bench for now.

Lucas Bergvall (Off for Yves Bissouma 85′) – 6

Had a couple of chances to get his name on the scoresheet but seemed a little overrun when combatting in midfield.

Brennan Johnson (Off for James Maddison 65′) – 9 – Man of the Match

A brilliant return to the starting XI for the first time since mid-January, but with an early yellow card to his name, it was sensible to take him off after the hour mark.

Dejan Kulusevski – 6

Incredibly quiet start to the game from the Swede at Portman Road as those around him intertwined, though he finally burst into life in the closing stages.

Brennan Johnson and Son Heung-min combine to pile pressure on Ipswich

Son Heung-min (Off for Wilson Odobert 74′) – 8

Set up Johnson on two occasions, grabbing his first goal contributions in four games, battling against heavy criticism from the Tottenham fans in recent weeks.

Mathys Tel – 4

Uncomfortable afternoon for the Bayern Munich loanee. Continues to work very hard as the sole striker in Postecoglou’s system, but with Ipswich deploying a heavy backline, it was always going to be difficult for the loanee.

Substitutions

James Maddison (On for Johnson 65′) – 7

Instrumental in the build-up to Spence’s goal, distracting the Ipswich with some dazzling footwork before setting up his teammate.

Pedro Porro (On for Udogie 65′) – N/A

Wilson Odobert (On for Son 74′) – N/A

Dane Scarlett (On for Tel 74′) – 7

Needed just a few touches of the ball to secure an assist, playing just 16 minutes at the end of the game. Postecoglou will be keeping a close eye.
