Brentford could face ‘severe problems’ after financial update – Stefan Borson
Brentford have released their latest full-year accounts for the 2023-24 campaign after securing another season of Premier League football.
The west London club finished 16th in the top-flight table last season, while they exited both domestic cup competitions at the third-round stage.
Brentford’s accounts for 2023-24 showed their wage bill grew from £98.8million to £114.4million, with their other operating expenses also increasing from £28.1million to £42.5million.
Thomas Frank’s side’s revenue remained static at £166.5million for the campaign, but they made a £7.9million loss after recording a £9.2million profit in 2022-23.
Under the profit and sustainability rules (PSR), top-flight clubs can lose a maximum of £105million over a rolling three-year period.
Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Brentford could face “severe problems” if they were to be relegated from the Premier League.
However, their place in the top flight is already all but secured for next season after picking up 37 points from their opening 26 games, leaving them 11th in the table.
Brentford in talks about summer player sales
Borson revealed there are already talks ongoing around which players Brentford could look to sell to balance the books this summer.
He told Football Insider: “The numbers are good and they are fine if they are in the upper half of the Premier League.
“Clearly, Brentford is a club that, if they were to be relegated, would have severe problems. They would have to rightsize their wage bill very quickly and that’s not easy to do.
“But likewise, they do have quite a lot of sellable assets. There are already talks about some of the players that they could sell in the summer.
“In their accounts, they specifically talk about their strategy in terms of selling players, so they have effectively flagged within their accounts we are a selling club, subject to receiving the right price.
“It more or less says those words, so that’s how Brentford fans need to understand the finances of their club.
“They have to stay in the Premier League with that wage bill, and they have to supplement financials with the sale of players for profit.”
