Brentford star with 96% pass completion could be promoted into starting XI, with big name axed

Brentford smashed Grimsby 5-0 in the EFL Cup fourth round as Reiss Nelson put in a stunning performance to amaze his manager.

Once thought of by Mikel Arteta as the future of Arsenal, Nelson joined Brentford on loan last summer to try and get his career in motion again.

Fulham had been looking to bring Nelson back to the club after a modest 2024-25 campaign in west London, but a deal never materialised.

Now working under Keith Andrews following a gradual introduction to the squad after injury, Nelson impressed in Brentford’s victory over Grimsby which could see him force his way into the starting XI.

Nelson gets off the mark with Brentford as Keith Andrews delighted with display

Handed only his second start for the Bees, the Englishman scored his first goal for his new club, tucking the ball home from outside the 18-yard box.

The former Cottager also teed up Keane Lewis-Potter for Brentford’s second on the night, creating one big chance and delivering one key pass.

What was eye-catching was his care on the ball, completing 27 of his 28 passes and losing possession on just eight occasions.

Moreover, the old Nelson was coming to the fore with three of his four attempted dribbles successful, highlighting a gradual return to form after a lengthy injury-induced absence.

The Arsenal academy graduate was hooked on the 68th minute as he eases back to full fitness, but the Irish boss will be thrilled by his showing.

Dango Ouattara’s starting spot in jeopardy after dismal performance

The number 11 could benefit from the underwhelming display of Dango Ouattara in the EFL Cup and challenge for the right-wing spot.

The Burkinabé was pretty anonymous against the League Two outfit, mustering just one shot in 60 minutes before being replaced by Kevin Schade.

Moreover, the former Bournemouth speedster managed just 15 touches and lost the ball on eight occasions, highlighting how isolated and poor he was when the ball arrived at his feet.

The excellence of Nelson spells bad news for Ouattara, especially considering his versatile ability to play on both flanks.

That could see Andrews line up with a front three of Schade, Igor Thiago and Nelson, demoting the 23-year-old to the bench given his disappointing display.

Particularly against Brentford’s next opponents Crystal Palace on 1 November, the dribbling ability of the Englishman could be utilised to break down Oliver Glasner’s low block.
