Brentford takeover gets green light from boardroom source

Brentford are almost certain to secure a fourth Premier League season following their promotion via the play-offs under Thomas Frank in 2021.

The Bees finished 16th in the Premier League last term but now sit 11th in the top flight and are pushing to better their highest-ever finish of ninth.

As per the club’s financial report for the 2023-24 season, Brentford’s wage bill grew £15.6million to £114.4million while other operating expenses ballooned 39% to £42.5million.

They made a pre-tax loss of almost £8million – with clubs only allowed to lose £105million across three years under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on a potential takeover at Brentford.

Brentford have no ‘long-term issues’ despite £8m loss

It has been widely reported that Brentford have been put up for sale by owner Matthew Benham, with initial valuations estimating the club is worth between £400-500million and Rothchild appointed to facilitate a sale.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted he doesn’t see “long-term issues” at Brentford despite their loss last season.

The Bees moved into the Gtech Community Stadium, which holds 17,250 fans, in 2020.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It was wages and operating costs which caused the loss.

“They had a bad season last year as well, so the prize money was down.

“Nevertheless, they’ve invested in the squad and we’re already seeing they have consolidated and will have a good season this time.

“It’s swings and roundabouts – I don’t expect this season to be anywhere near as bad as last year.

“It just shows that when you’re a club the scale of Brentford, when you have a bad season – it really impacts you.

“Man City can afford a bad season, Brentford can’t. They had to bounce back – and they have.

“Brentford also have the Ivan Toney sale coming through next year, that will be a big number.

“Overall, I don’t see long-term issues at Brentford. They are a very well-run club.

“They are out in the market now either looking to be acquired or to have investors come in. I don’t see any problems at all.”

Newcastle line up Mbeumo with ‘Brentford under pressure to sell

Ivan Toney was the big-money departure at Brentford last summer (2024) and he could be followed out of the exit door by more key stars.

Football Insider has been told by former Man United chief scout Mick Brown (20 February) that Newcastle are prepared to meet Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo price tag in the off-season.

The Bees are under pressure to cash in on Mbuemo, whose contract expires in 2026.

He has scored 15 goals and contributed five assists in 30 games across all competitions this season.
