Brighton are ‘not exceptional’ – Keith Wyness swipes at ‘love-fest’ with ‘everyone getting carried away’
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted “everyone’s getting carried away” with a Brighton “love-fest”.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Seagulls have not done “anything exceptional” – and have even benefitted from “a bit of luck”.
Brighton published their 2022-23 accounts last week (2 April), revealing a club-record turnover of £204.5million and a Premier League record of £122.8million in profit.
Last term, the south coast club qualified for the Europa League group stages despite losing manager Graham Potter to Chelsea.
They also received a British-record transfer fee of £115million for midfielder Moises Caicedo – who also moved to Stamford Bridge.
Wyness hits out at Brighton ‘love-fest’ after Premier League record broken
Wyness claimed Brighton have had “less disadvantages” than other sides.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think there’s a love-fest about Brighton being well-run.
“They are run by very bright and good people. But I don’t think there’s anything exceptional going on.
“There’s also a bit of luck involved, as we’ve seen with the Chelsea factor.
“They’ve got great new facilities and that has come from them not having much debt when they built the stadium and training ground.
“They have put good people in place and they have made good decisions, but I wouldn’t get carried away and say it’s a Harvard Business School study.

“Each club has a unique set of problems, with advantages and disadvantages. Brighton have had less disadvantages than others.
“They’ve done a great job, but to say it’s because they are so well-run – I think everyone’s getting a bit carried away.”
