Brighton want to land significant windfall after £40m reveal – Stefan Borson

Brighton are looking to increase their revenue after announcing plans to spend £40million on stadium upgrades at the Amex.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the development could potentially include new hospitality areas being built inside the stadium.

Brighton announced on 24 December plans to relocate away fans at the Amex as part of a £40million development.

The club will increase their ground’s capacity by 800 seats, bringing the overall total to 32,500.

They will also build a new fan zone outside the stadium that can hold up to 3,000 people and will open in spring this year.

Brighton posted a club-record revenue of £204million in their latest accounts for 2022-23.

Brighton could add hospitality areas after stadium plans revealed

But Borson insisted there appears to be “something wrong” with the information provided about the stadium development due to the level of investment going in to add just 800 seats.

He told Football Insider: “Brighton are another club that are taking potential revenue, opportunity and players from some of the traditionally bigger clubs.

“But I think there is something wrong with the numbers on that story.

“I think it’s unlikely they are spending £40million to add 800 seats. That doesn’t seem to make sense.

“Maybe the fan zone is something that’s got quite a lot of corporate hospitality in it perhaps.

“Maybe the 800 seats are the equivalent of box seats. But even then, the numbers don’t look quite right.

“All of the clubs are going to look to invest in all the areas that they can. They are all now trying to do these Boxpark-type developments.

“But I don’t think anybody is going to Brighton’s stadium to go to the fan zone outside of a matchday.

“It might work at somewhere like Newcastle and you can get some revenue coming in for hospitality spend, casual dining and drinks outside of a football game.

“That’s all revenue that they can use within the football club, so they are all going to look for these opportunities.”
