Broadhead ‘shining’ for Sunderland after clause confirmed – Phillips

Sunderland striker Nathan Broadhead “is shining” since his return from injury, according to Kevin Phillips.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend heaped praise on the 23-year-old for his “brilliant” finishing and ball-carrying ability.

Broadhead has become a regular starter for Lee Johnson’s side since arriving from Everton on a season-long loan deal in August.

The striker has scored four goals in his last four league starts for the Black Cats, including a wonderful flicked finish against Plymouth on Saturday.

As quoted by the Northern Echo (10 December), Lee Johnson revealed Broadhead has a recall clause in his loan agreement.

However, the Sunderland boss “expects” the player to stay until the end of the campaign.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Broadhead’s form, Phillips said: “I’m a big fan of the player.

“He travels really well with the ball and has a low centre of gravity.

“It was a quite brilliant finish on Saturday. His all-round performance was very good in the first half. Everyone dropped off in the second half.

“He did very well at the beginning of the season but then he had the injury. It looks as if he is back to full fitness now though.

“He is shining. I think he’s a player they need to keep fit from now until the end of the season.

“His minutes might need to be managed by Lee Johnson over the next few weeks because it’s a busy period. It would be hard to leave him out though because he is scoring and creating. Credit to him.”
