Bruce: This is my favourite Aston Villa deal so far
By Harry Sykes
Steve Bruce has claimed his appointment as Aston Villa manager was his favourite moment at the club.
Bruce nominates the phone call from club chiefs to tell him he had secured the post last October as more memorable than any of the other deals since he had been at the helm.
The experienced manager, 56, oversaw a major overhaul of the squad in the January transfer window, with Scott Hogan, Henri Lansbury, Conor Hourihane, Birkir Bjarnason and Sam Johnstone among the big-name signings.
But pushing those deals through were secondary to Bruce landing the ninth managerial job of his 19-year coaching career.
Asked to name his favourite Villa moment, Bruce told the official Aston Villa website: “The big one, of course, was getting the job.

“Getting the phone call is one of the great phone calls you get.
“First there’s ‘will you come and have a chat’ and then it’s ‘will you start thinking about putting your backroom staff together – then you think ‘I have got a chance here’.
“Then you get that phonecall to say ‘you’ve got the job’ which is a fantastic feeling.”
Bruce replaced Roberto Di Matteo at Villa Park and initially oversaw a revival before a crippling set of results either side of the new year effectively ended the club’s promotion hopes.
Villa have won five of their last six matches to climb to 12th in the Championship table but are 11 points adrift of Sheffield Wednesday, who are sixth and in the final promotion spot.
In other Aston Villa transfer news, talks are to get underway as a proven Premier League performer wants to join the Midlands club.
