Bruce holds talks with five-time PL winner about Aston Villa switch – report
By Derek Smithson
Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has met with John Terry to discuss his future and to try convince him to join his side, according to a report.
The Sun claim that the pair held talks after a round of golf in Portugal as Terry ponders his future, with his time at Chelsea finally coming to an end this summer.
It is understood that the 36-year-old is keen on a move to the Midlands giants and likes the idea of fighting for promotion in the Championship.
The report details that Villa owner Tony Xia has told Bruce that he would need to sell players in order for a pay package to be put together for Terry.
The Chelsea legend has spoken to Premier League side Bournemouth about a potential move next season, but is keen on working under friend Bruce.
Villa are looking to improve their squad as they look to achieve promotion from England’s second tier next season.
They currently have Nathan Baker and James Chester as their preferred centre-back combination, but that could be rivalled next season.
Terry is regarded as a Premier League legend and has won the top-flight tile on five occasions during his time at Stamford Bridge.
The ex-England international has only ever played for Chelsea since graduating from their academy, but looks set for a different test at the end of his career.
He has racked up 690 senior appearances for the Blues and scored 65 goals in return.
Football Insider verdict:
This would be one of the most remarkable Championship signings if the deal goes through and Villa fans should be praying it does. Terry may be near the latter stages of his career, but he would still have a huge influence if he linked up with Bruce. The centre-back has unbelievable experience and most importantly a winning mentality, something that could definitely drive Villa to promotion from the Championship. A back three with Terry in the middle seems like a good idea and his class would surely standout in the Championship. He is also very underrated in possession and it would be a huge statement of intent if they pulled off a deal for the Chelsea captain.
