Bruno Fernandes, Rio Ferdinand react to David De Gea amid Man United return news

Bruno Fernandes and Rio Ferdinand reacted to David De Gea’s latest message as Man United fans beg for an Old Trafford return.

The 34-year-old was chased out of Manchester during Erik ten Hag’s tenure after 545 appearances for the Red Devils, ultimately being replaced by Andre Onana, who Man United fans are desperate to get rid of.

Due to the former Inter goalkeeper’s struggles at Old Trafford, he was linked with a move back from Fiorentina, though iNews (15 April) squashed any chance of a Man United return for De Gea.

Since signing for Fiorentina last summer, he has quickly become a much-loved figure in Serie A, helping lead his side to Europa Conference League qualification with a sixth-place finish in Italy.

The shot-stopper has made 42 appearances, keeping 11 clean sheets, and reached the current campaign’s Conference League semi-final before being knocked out by Real Betis, who are set to face Chelsea on Wednesday, 28 May.

Man United fans have been impressed by David De Gea’s performances for Fiorentina.

David De Gea remains connected to Man United stars

Taking to Instagram (26 May), De Gea wrote: “The season comes to an end and we completed one of our aims – European football once again.

“I want to thank the club, my teammates, and the Fiorentina supporters. We always battled, fighting for the crest and gave everything we had. Now is a time to relax and reflect.”

A number of current and ex-players reacted to the Spaniard’s post, including Leeds United’s Dan James, and Man United duo Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, while Rio Ferdinand replied: “My GK,” with a heart emoji.

Ruben Amorim must fix goalkeeper situation at Man United

Football Insider verdict

Football Insider understands that Man United plan to accept a £50million offer for Onana amid interest from Saudi Arabia, and supporters at Old Trafford would love to see that come to fruition.

While De Gea’s talent with the ball at his feet was often a problem due to Ten Hag’s style of play, his shot-stopping was second-to-none during most of his days in the Premier League, which the Red Devils are desperate for.

Andre Onana, Man United

Man United have also been linked with Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez, who is expected to depart Villa Park this summer, but it remains to be seen what Ruben Amorim is planning ahead of the summer transfer window.

With his side finishing 15th in the Premier League table this season, and also losing the Europa League final to Tottenham, there needs to be some serious changes at Old Trafford.

Amorim is under serious pressure already at Man United, but it is highly unlikely that Sir Jim Ratcliffe pulls the plug on his future just yet, so it is important that the manager is backed in the transfer market.

While De Gea is seemingly off the table for the Red Devils, finding a replacement for Onana should be the number-one task on the to-do list this summer.
