Bruno Fernandes tipped to leave Man United after wage cut – ‘I’ll go then’

Man United risk the departure of Bruno Fernandes after news of squad-wide pay cuts in Ruben Amorim’s team this season.

Supporters at Old Trafford have been left massively disappointed by their team’s performances on the pitch, with the Red Devils sitting 14th in the Premier League table after 32 matches.

It is likely to be one of the club’s worst league campaigns in its history, made all the more baffling by Amorim still being in with a chance of lifting silverware via the Europa League.

Amorim has, understandably, come under heavy fire at Man United, but it is the players’ underwhelming displays under Erik ten Hag which could rustle a few feathers ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to The Athletic (15 April), goalkeeper Andre Onana was left shocked by a squad-wide 25 per cent wage cut after United missed out on Champions League qualification last season.

It is understood that individual players are allowed to negotiate their pay cut, and Danny Murphy believes that Bruno Fernandes could leave Old Trafford this summer if his performances do not see him omitted from the punishment.

Bruno Fernandes does not deserve Man United pay cut despite his contract

Speaking live on talkSPORT (16 April, 11:27am), host Jim White said: “They all didn’t qualify for the Champions League this season, not just Onana,” suggesting that all players deserve the same punishment.

Murphy indicated that the captain holds all the cards as arguably the only one to currently be maintaining a decent reputation and replied: “I know, but Bruno Fernandes could just say, ‘I’ll go then’ because he’s wanted. Someone will take Bruno every day. It’s capitalism.”

Murphy does make a good point. While the entire squad missed out on Champions League football at the end of last season, finishing eighth in the Premier League, he is the most consistent player by far.

The attacking midfielder has only ever dipped below 25 goal contributions in one season since joining the Red Devils from Sporting CP in 2019, with no other player matching his talents at Old Trafford.

While Football Insider understands that Man United currently have no concerns over Fernandes‘ potential departure this summer, this situation could help result in the loss of their captain.

The manager has publicly stated that his compatriot had been told he’s going nowhere ahead of the summer, which isn’t generally something that happens when there is absolutely no worry of the possibility arising.

Real Madrid are keeping tabs on the 30-year-old, and with United’s current financial issues ongoing, many have suggested that Sir Jim Ratcliffe could cash in this summer for a bit of profit.

That would be a serious blow to Amorim’s complete rebuild in Manchester, with few players having the same impact as Fernandes in the Premier League, so it might be a good idea to reassess his salary this summer.
