Bruno Guimaraes: ‘£100m’ Newcastle United transfer claim after update from Spain – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Newcastle United would turn down a “£100million” bid for Bruno Guimaraes.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted big clubs may already be sniffing around the 24-year-old after his impressive start to life at St James’ Park.

Spanish publication AS report (21 April) that Real Madrid have identified Guimaraes as a transfer target for 2023, as they look to refresh their midfield options.

The Brazil international joined Newcastle from Olympique Lyonnais in January and signed a four-and-a-half-year contract.

Whelan suggested Guimaraes’ performances will have caught the eye of talent spotters from top clubs.

However, he insisted no amount of money would tempt Newcastle to sell any time soon.

Asked if he thought big clubs would be sniffing around Guimaraes, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah, but he’s going nowhere.

“He’s got a four-year contract and he looks like he’s really enjoying his time. He’s made a massive difference for Newcastle since he got into that first team after sitting on the bench.

“Bruno will have been looking from a distance and figuring out the team. Getting to know his new teammates, manager, club and environment.

“There’s absolutely no doubt what a signing he’s been. He’s been a fantastic signing for Newcastle. I think he’s one of these players for the future.

“They will not be letting him go. They will not be accepting the money. You could offer £100million now and they will say no because it’s not in their plans to be selling these players.

They’re trying to build the squad to compete. It wouldn’t make any sense.”

Guimaraes has scored three goals in 12 appearances for Newcastle so far.

He has six caps for Brazil under his belt.
