Bruno Guimaraes shines, 3/10 teammate truly abysmal – Newcastle player ratings vs Brentford
Brentford moved up to seventh in the Premier League after Dango Ouattara’s late strike earned them a 3-2 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park.
Newcastle took the lead midway through the first half as Sven Botman nodded home from Bruno Guimaraes‘ corner to score on his 100th appearance for the club.
Brentford hit back before the interval as Vitaly Janelt headed past Nick Pope from Dango Ouattara’s dangerous cross to draw the visitors level.
Keith Andrews’ side were then ahead on the stroke of half-time as Igor Thiago coolly dispatched a penalty after Jacob Murphy was penalised for handball.
Newcastle looked the more likely to score next as the game wore on, and captain Guimaraes won and scored his own spot-kick in the 79th minute following Michael Kayode’s foul.
Brentford then stole it at the death as Ouattara broke free on the left side of the area and smashed a shot through Pope’s legs, and it ended 3-2 in a breathless encounter on Tyneside.

Bruno Guimaraes – Man of the match
Guimaraes missed Newcastle’s previous four games through injury, and he marked his timely return with a trademark captain’s performance at St James’ Park to
The Brazil star caused chaos with his corners all evening, notching an assist for Botman’s opener, and he was their main driving force from midfield throughout.
His darting run into the box caused Kayode’s trip to lead to the hosts’ penalty, and Guimaraes never looked like he was going to miss as he sent Caoimhin Kelleher the wrong way.
It is easy to see why Newcastle fans love Guimaraes, as he created the most chances (three) and was the most fouled player (four) in the match, and he earns an eight out of 10 rating for his performance.
Jacob Murphy gave a penalty away and was hauled off at half-time
Contrastingly, Newcastle fans have fumed at Murphy on numerous occasions this season as he struggles to replicate his standout form from last term.
The 30-year-old winger had a real game to forget against the Bees at St James’ Park, as he took just three touches in their penalty area, won one duel and had one off-target shot on goal.
His toughest moment came in the 44th minute as he blocked Mathias Jensen’s shot with his arm and conceded a penalty, which saw Brentford go in front.
Eddie Howe soon saw fit to take him out of the game at half-time, so he wasn’t even able to make up for his mistake, thus earning a three out of 10 rating.
