Bruno incidents: ‘Newcastle star should be off vs Leicester’, Mike Dean reacts
Bruno Guimaraes should have been sent off for Newcastle United against Leicester City, Clinton Morrison has claimed.
It was an eventful first-half for the midfielder at St James’ Park against the Foxes on Saturday afternoon (14 December).
The midfielder avoided a yellow card for diving after going down in the Leicester area while potentially looking for a penalty, with referee Thomas Bramall instead awarding a goal kick.
Moments later the Newcastle man did go into the book for a high challenge on Stephy Mavididi, that Morrison believed might have been a red card rather than a yellow alone, let alone a second had he been cautioned for the first.
Speaking about those two incidents on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday (3:39pm), the former Crystal Palace striker said: “Why wasn’t he booked for the dive before? So he wasn’t book for the dive before, he’s just caught Mavididi high up on his shin.”
Host Simon Thomas then asked: “So for you he should be off?”
Morrison replied: “Yeah. I thought this would be a red card. I thought VAR would have a look… it looked really high. It looked out of control, but they gave him a yellow card.”
Explaining why it was not a red, former referee Mike Dean cited the yellow received by Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo for a similar challenge on Tottenham’s Pape Sarr the previous weekend, saying: “I think with the first one with Bruno when he went down in the area the referee’s gone option three and just given a goal kick. He hasn’t cautioned him for simulation or give the free kick.
“The second one, if you go back to what they said last week with the Caicedo challenge, it’s kind of brushed his shin and gone down, so I can understand again there why he hasn’t sent him off.”
Bruno Guimaraes adds insult to injury for Leicester against Newcastle
Football Insider Opinion
As the game went on, Leicester will no doubt have become more and more frustrated that Guimaraes was not sent off here.
A man advantage had the midfielder been sent off when he made that challenge would have given the Foxes a better chance of getting into the game after Jacob Murphy’s opener on the half-hour mark.
Instead, shortly after half-time it was Guimaraes himself who got on the scoresheet to make it 2-0 to Newcastle.

Leicester though may feel he should not have been on the pitch to score that goal in the circumstances, which left them with a mountain to climb in the match.
Often though, when you are in the sort of relegation battle that the Foxes are right now, those sort of big moments do not go your way.
From a Newcastle perspective by contrast, they will be hugely relieved they did lose Guimaraes to a red here, especially since they quickly took the game away from Ruud van Nistelrooy’s men after his goal, racing into a 4-0 lead on the hour.
Not only because of the impact he went on to have in the game, but also due to the fact that they could ill-afford to have a player suspended with the injury problems they are already dealing with this season.
