Bundesliga heavyweights join Tottenham in chase for in-demand PL 23-year-old - report

By Will Butcher

RB Leipzig have joined Tottenham and a whole host of Premier League clubs in the pursuit of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, according to a report.

The Sun claim the cash-rich Bundesliga outfit are interested in taking the 23-year-old Sunderland stopper to Germany, but face competition from Spurs.

It is believes that Premier League sides Arsenal, Man City, Everton and West Ham are also interested in signing Pickford who has shone in a dismal Sunderland side this season.

Leipzig are known for their preference in signing younger players, which has proved to be a major factor in their sublime first season in Germany’s top flight.

Currently sitting in second and only behind Bayern Munich, the likes of Timo Werner, Naby Keita and Bernardo have all impressed despite being under the age of 23.

Now, it appears Leipzig could bolster their young squad even further by signing Pickford, but will have to move quickly if they are to beat Tottenham to his signature.

Spurs already have Hugo Lloris, Michel Vorm and Pau Lopez on the books at White Hart Lane, but the latter is on loan and Vorm’s future is in doubt with his contract only running until 2018.

Pickford has made 26 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland this season, proving to be a rare light in the Black Cats season as they sit rock-bottom of the Premier League.

Football Insider verdict:

There is no doubt that Pickford will become a star in the future wherever he plays, as his Sunderland form has proved his talent in a tough season. However, with a pick of clubs, Pickford isn’t going to go to a club where he’s destined to sit on the bench and play understudy. Spurs were linked to Pickford earlier in the season wehn Lloris’ future was in doubt. However, with his demand for Champions League football fulfilled for next season, he’s very likely to stay, which means Pickford is unlikely to arrive. However, it remains to be seen if Pickford would want to move abroad to Germany this summer, and follow Oliver Burke in swapping England for the Bundesliga.
