'By Far The Best At Celtic' - McAvennie in awe of Hoops player who's 'Saved Lennon's Job'

Frank McAvennie has heaped praise on Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths and claimed he makes a “massive difference” to the side when he plays.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Parkhead legend insisted that the 30-year-old is “by far the best finisher at the club” and should be starting regularly alongside Odsonne Edouard.

Griffiths started his first Scottish Premiership game of the 2020/21 campaign last night as Neil Lennon’s side beat Ross County 2-0 at Celtic Park.

The Scotland international grabbed Celtic’s second to take his season tally to four goals in eight games across all competitions.

McAvennie urged Neil Lennon to give the striker a run of games in the side over Christmas.

“Everyone can see that Leigh Griffiths has got to play,” he told Football Insider.

“He is by far the best finisher at the club so I would always play Griff and Edouard together. That is what they did last year.

“I never liked training so I understand where Griff is coming from with his comments at the weekend. It does not matter how much you run him, he will not be fit unless he gets match fitness. There is a massive difference between being fit and being match fit.

“If he is out of shape give him game time. He is better than Kilmala and Ajeti.

“He is what Celtic need. Griff has saved the manager’s job a few times with important goals. He needs to be playing every week, he needs a run.”

Speaking on Griffiths performance last night, Lennon said: “Griff needs to get sharper and he’ll say ‘well, you need to play me.’

“I think the more he plays and stays fit he’ll be an asset for us going forward.”
