Liverpool will prioritise signing another centre-half this summer after a sloppy defensive display at Real Madrid.
That is the view of ex-Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the performances of Nathaniel Phillips over the past few months.
Phillips endured a difficult 90 minutes against Zinedine Zidane’s side on Tuesday night, as the Reds lost 3-1 to their Spanish hosts.
While he made 11 interceptions and boasted 93 per cent pass accuracy and 73 per cent duel success rate, he was responsible for at least one of the La Liga giant’s goals. (Wyscout)
Campbell suggested Phillips, who has been thrust into the side as a result of injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, is not the answer long-term.
“Liverpool clearly still need to sign another centre-half in the summer and I think that will be the priority,” he told Football Insider.
“They need to have back-ups who are up to speed because let’s have it right, it will be another with Virgil van Dijk.
“They need quality, elite defenders in reserve because the lack of back-up has hurt Liverpool time and time again this season.
“Fair enough, Phillips is getting some game time but last night we found out. Playing against that Arsenal team is one thing, Real Madrid was a far bigger test and there will be more of those to come in the latter stages of the season.
“He did not have anything to do against Arsenal, let’s be honest. I could have played centre-half and Liverpool would have been fine. Arsenal were not at the races.
“There are bigger and stronger teams ahead and we will see what Phillips can truly do.”
