'Call me cynical' - Exclusive: Robinson suggests Liverpool orchestrated 'Big blow' on purpose

Paul Robinson claimed that Liverpool orchestrated Fabinho getting his fifth yellow card of the season against Crystal Palace as the Reds can cope without him against Brighton.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Tottenham and Blackburn keeper claimed it was a big blow for the Reds to be without Fabinho as he is the first name on the teamsheet.

Fabinho picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in the 2-1 win over Palace for a late challenge on Crystal Palace’s Cheick Kouyate and is now suspended for Saturday’s clash with Brighton as a result.

Robinson claimed that Liverpool may have looked at the fixture list and thought it was better that Fabinho missed out on facing the Seagulls rather than risk him missing a tougher game in December.

When asked about Fabinho being suspended for the clash with Brighton, Robinson told Football Insider: “I think it’s a big blow for Liverpool not to have Fabinho as I think he’s been the first name on the teamsheet.

“But I think coming into the Christmas period carrying four yellow cards, call me cynical, but they may have looked at the fixtures and said Brighton at home why don’t you pick up a yellow card and have a rest for that one?

“People talk like players don’t do that or players say we didn’t do that on purpose but I’ve been in dressing rooms, that happens.

“Look at Liverpool’s fixture list, they’ve got Everton, Bournemouth away, Watford at home, Villa, West Ham, Leicester, they’ve got some tough fixtures coming up so to have Fabinho carrying four yellow cards into those fixtures, wouldn’t have been ideal.

“Whereas if he gets the card before December starts, and misses the game at home to Brighton, a game where they’re not going to need him, it’s very sensible.”

Fabinho has regularly featured for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season with him playing 18 times across all competitions.

The 26-year-old Brazilian has only missed one Premier League match so far in the current campaign and has racked up one goal as well as registered two assists in his league appearances.
