‘Calvert-Lewin makes transfer decision after surprise Sunderland approach’

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a free agent in demand with the former Everton striker targeted by another Premier League club.

Calvert-Lewin departed Everton following the expiry of his contract at the end of June, bringing to an end a nine year association with the club.

The 28-year-old has struggled with injuries in recent seasons and the striker hopes to reignite his career with a fresh start at a new club.

Man United have been linked with Calvert-Lewin, whilst Football Insider had been exclusively told Fulham were leading the race.

According to talkSPORT [August 5th] Sunderland had made a move for Calvert-Lewin, offering the striker a deal at the Stadium of Light.

Calvert-Lewin though wants to keep all options open right now, with the hope that a club higher up in the Premier League will come in for him.

Leeds United were interested in a deal for Calvert-Lewin, but the wage demands requested by the striker put any end to any transfer.

Sunderland though do look to have agreed a deal to sign Chelsea’s Marc Guiu on a season long loan to add to the eight signings Regis Le Bris has brought in already.

Football Insider Verdict

Whilst Calvert-Lewin explores his options, the news is a blow to Sunderland and manager Le Bris.

Calvert-Lewin would have provided extensive Premier League experience, and a proven record, when fit, of scoring goals in the top flight.

The Black Cats are taking a chance on the potential of 19-year-old Guiu who is still unproven in the Premier League.

Sunderland have added wingers to their forward line with the captures of Simon Adingra and Chemsdine Talbi, but Le Bris still requires more goal scorers.

Sunderland are facing the same problems as Leeds, who also enquired about Calvert-Lewin, with both sides looking strong defensively but weak in attack.

Wilson Isidor hit 12 Champions goals last season, whilst fellow striker Eliezer Mayenda scored eight, highlighting the need for more firepower.

The gap between the Premier League and Championship is so vast that the pair will struggle to score goals next season, and Sunderland cannot rely on them for their Premier League survival.
