Calvin Bassey responds to Alan Shearer after Bruno Fernandes dig in Fulham win

Calvin Bassey had a message for Alan Shearer after the pundit responded to his dig at Bruno Fernandes and the FA.

Fulham beat Man United after a dramatic penalty shootout win and secured their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals on 2 March.

The game ended 1-1 after extra time, with Marco Silva’s side taking the lead through Bassey, who marked his first-ever FA Cup appearance with a goal.

Fernandes equalised for United, but it wasn’t enough to prevent his side from crashing out. Goalkeeper Bernd Leno shared a message with Fulham fans following his crucial saves that helped send the team into the last eight.

After the match, Bassey took aim at the FA and Fernandes, questioning why the Portuguese midfielder was awarded Player of the Match despite his dominant display. His comments sparked a response, and now the defender has directed another message towards Shearer.

Calvin Bassey shares light-hearted exchange with Alan Shearer after Fulham controversy

After Bassey’s initial reaction on X, where he questioned “No man of the match?”, Shearer addressed the situation on The Rest is Football podcast, as he was responsible for awarding the Player of the Match.

Shearer admitted: “I sent my apologies to Calvin Bassey, he should’ve got man of the match. There you go.” Fulham’s official X account quickly joined in on the fun, clipping the video and tagging Shearer with the caption: “Apology accepted.”

Bassey then responded with laughing emojis and the caption: “That’s better” bringing a humorous end to the debate.

His standout performance didn’t go unnoticed, with Alex Iwobi sending Bassey a message after a display that saw him make 11 clearances, win seven ground duels, and register three interceptions.

Marco Silva’s impressive form continues amid speculation over his future

Fulham
Marco Silva has had an impressive run as Fulham manager.

Since arriving in 2023, Bassey has become a key player under Marco Silva, making 27 appearances, scoring twice, and amassing 2,384 minutes of game time this season.

As for Fulham, their FA Cup journey continues with a quarter-final clash against Crystal Palace, further underlining their strong form this season. With the team also pushing for European football, Silva’s work has interested clubs in his signature.

Earlier in the campaign, Tottenham were linked with Marco Silva, when Ange Postecoglou looked increasingly likely to lose his job. For now though, the focus remains on maintaining momentum, with an important fixture against Brighton on 8 March up next.
