Cameron Carter-Vickers embarrasses Chris Sutton after ‘so stupid’ Celtic claim

Celtic centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers left Chris Sutton looking foolish on Sky Sports commentary during his side’s Scottish Premiership clash with Kilmarnock.

Brendan Rodgers’ side went into that game looking to bounce back following their shock defeat to St Johnstone last weekend.

Victory against Derek McInnes’ team on Saturday (12 April) would also put the Bhoys one game from the title, and their success would be confirmed if Rangers lose at Aberdeen on Sunday (13 April).

All of that sparked a dominant performance from Celtic, with Carter-Vickers producing one of the standout moments.

Cameron Carter-Vickers produces stunning long-range strike

Rodgers’ side took the lead after just eight minutes in that game thanks to a brilliant goal from Reo Hatate.

Just moments later, Daizen Maeda tapped in from yards out to make it 2-0, and become the first player to score in eight consecutive starts at Parkhead since Henrik Larsson.

Celtic are understood to be keen to keep Carter-Vickers this summer amid interest from elsewhere, and he showed why in a different way after 20 minutes.

Picking up the ball 30 yards from goal, the centre-back fired an incredible strike past Kilmarnock goalkeeper Kieran O’Hara into the top far corner.

That left Sutton stunned as he commentated on the game for Sky Sports, as he admitted he had been ready to criticise the defender for taking the shot.

Reacting to that goal, the former Celtic striker said (12 April, 12:51pm): “Well it’s an absolute cracker from Carter-Vickers. I’ve got to say when he was shaping up to shoot I was thinking ‘don’t be so stupid!’

“Well what do I know?! The space opened up, I mean that’s one hell of a strike, that stays hit! All sorts of movement on it. O’Hara nowhere near it. Must be the best part of 30 yards out.

“I might be wrong but I can’t remember in his time at Celtic him striking one like that.”

Celtic deliver stunning showing to all but confirm another title

Football Insider Verdict

Some disappointing performances and results in recent weeks have led to suggestions that Rodgers could leave Celtic to return to the Premier League in the summer.

Here though, the Scottish league leaders produced an excellent response to those recent setbacks, and after a second from Hatate, they would lead 4-1 by half time.

As a result there would have to be an unthinkable turn of events for them to now miss out on another Scottish Premiership title this season.

Carter-Vickers has undoubtedly played a big part in that, and did so here, albeit from an attacking perspective with that goal, rather than his usual defensive duties.

But given he had simply not had any work to get through in the back line, you can hardly blame him for taking on an effort like this with so little pressure on him.

In doing so, he has now created a moment that will likely stick with many Celtic fans for a very long time.
