Kevin Campbell has claimed “the time has come” for Jack Grealish to leave Aston Villa for “one of the big boys”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker claimed the “incredible” 25-year-old needs to move to a club like Manchester City to get the recognition he deserves.
Grealish contributed an impressive six goals and 12 assists in 26 Premier League appearances this season.
A Man City source has told Football Insider the latest is that the club retain a strong interest in the attacking midfielder and plan to submit a huge bid when the transfer window opens.
Villa’s form suffered a major dip when Grealish was sidelined for three months earlier this calendar year.
Dean Smith’s side have a win ratio of 0.54 when their captain has started this season compared to just 0.21 when he hasn’t. (transfermarkt)
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Villa could afford to lose Grealish this summer, Campbell said:
“Grealish signed a new contract at the beginning of the season and I think it was a case of the club protecting themselves. Yes, Grealish would have been given a well-deserved bump on his salary but it was all about the club protecting their biggest asset.
“I think the time has come for Grealish, like Kane, to make the next move.
“He has a huge amount of quality and should be one of the first names on the team sheet with England and the fact that he isn’t is ridiculous. Sometimes you only get the recognition when you make the big move. If you perform at one of the big boys, you get all of the attention.
“Will a Man City pull the trigger? He is an incredible player and if he goes to City his estimation would go up even more.
“Grealish is doing great things at Villa but I just think the time has come for him to move on and I expect a big boy to sign him.”
