Campbell ‘brutally honest’ on Kieran Trippier after behind-the-scenes Newcastle United reveal
Kevin Campbell has slammed the consistency of officiating after Kieran Trippier’s overturned red card at Newcastle United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said “it is luck of the draw” when it comes to referees and red cards in the Premier League.
Trippier was sent off for a high challenge on Kevin De Bruyne in the second half of Newcastle’s 3-3 draw with Man City.

However, referee Jarred Gillett downgraded his decision to a yellow after consulting the pitch-side monitor on the advice of VAR official Peter Bankes.
Speaking to Sky Sports (21 August), Trippier revealed that he had spoke to De Bruyne after the game and “apologised” for the tackle.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the incident, Campbell said: “I’ll be brutally honest, if Trippier had got sent off I would not have said a word.
“Both feet were off the ground and he is out of control.
“I am pleased that he did not get sent off though because there was no malice in it. It was a poor tackle but not every foul is a sending off.

“We should be trying to keep 11 v 11 on the pitch as much as we can. If it is out of order, then it has to be a red.
“Who knows what a red card is anymore? It is down to the referee’s opinion. With another set to officials, Trippier would have been sent off. You cannot legislate for what is going on. It is the luck of the draw.”
In other news, Newcastle United have been told to U-turn on Scott McTominay after a transfer update.
