Campbell can’t believe ‘never-before-seen’ Kane development at Tottenham
Tottenham striker Harry Kane receives preferential treatment from referees because of his status as England captain.
That is the view of former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 28-year-old’s late challenge on Andy Robertson.
Kane escaped red after a high tackle on Robertson in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Athletic‘s David Ornstein has claimed (20 December) VAR chose not to intervene because the Liverpool defender was jumping when fouled.
Ex-Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg told BBC Radio 5 Live Robertson is “lucky to be walking” from the challenge.
He added that the officials are “not doing their job correctly” if they cannot recognised Kane’s tackle as a red.
When asked for his assessment of the incident, Campbell told Football Insider:
“Kane is the first player I have seen go for a ball, out of control, with his studs up, make contact with the opposition player and escape a red card. I’ve never seen before any other player get away with it.
“It has got to be for a reason. The fact that Kane is England captain maybe precedes him.

“It is not the player saying he should have preferential treatment but maybe the referees give him the benefit of the doubt because he is the England captain. We saw that with Alan Shearer. Maybe it’s a perk of being England captain.
“Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp will not be happy about it though. It really should have been a red card and that has a big impact on the game.”
