Campbell ‘can’t believe’ what he’s seen from Willian at Arsenal
Kevin Campbell has ripped into Willian and claimed he has had a “season to forget” at Arsenal.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker said it’s “not good enough” that it has taken the 32-year-old nine months to score his first goal for the club.
Willian scored his first goal for Mikel Arteta’s side on Sunday in a 3-1 win over West Brom at the Emirates.
It was the Brazilian winger’s 37th appearance since moving to Arsenal on a free transfer last August.
Speaking after the weekend’s victory, Willian told the Evening Standard that it has been a “difficult” first season in north London but insisted he never doubted his ability.
When asked for his assessment of Willian’s first season at the Emirates, Campbell told Football Insider: “I cannot believe it has taken him that long to get a goal.
“It has been a season to forget for Willian, that’s for sure.
“At the start of the season you looked at Willian and thought he was the kind of player who could really help some of the younger lads, the likes of Saka and Smith Rowe.
“He has been so consistent over the years but he has not shown it this season. He has been very inconsistent.
“To score you first goal now, when we are practically at the end of the season, it’s not good enough. I know he has a few assists but he has not been the same.
“We expected him to be a leader, no vocally, but performance-wise. It has just not happened for him.”
