Campbell expects Gerrard to snub Aston Villa offer after 'remarkable' confirmed news

Aston Villa will need to provide Steven Gerrard with “certain assurances” if he is to leave Rangers, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said his “gut says” the 41-year-old will remain at Ibrox until the end of the season.

Aston Villa announced the dismissal of Dean Smith on Sunday after a run of five straight defeats.

A Villa source told Football Insider on Wednesday morning that the club are confident of appointing Gerrard as their new boss by Sunday after talks last night.

It comes after this site broke the news on Tuesday that the Rangers manager is ready to tell his club’s board he wants the Villa job.

Campbell is still bemused by the sacking of Smith after the “remarkable job” he did at Villa Park.

“I don’t think it’s impossible but Villa will have to give Gerrard certain assurances,” he told Football Insider.

“It is a difficult one. Steven Gerrard has got a European campaign and a league title to fight for. He has built something special at Rangers. Is he going to jeopardise it by going to Villa right now?

“There would have to be certain assurances for him to consider leaving. He will need to know that he will be given time and funds.

“My gut says that he is going to stay until the end of the season. He will want to go back to back.

“It is a tough one for Villa. I think they jumped the gun by sacking Dean Smith. He did a remarkable job there. Where is the loyalty? There is no loyalty at these football clubs.”
