Campbell fears late-window exit from Rangers after Athletic update

Kevin Campbell fears Rangers will be forced into selling one of their star players if Europa League qualification is not secured on Thursday night.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker stressed the “massive” financial importance of the second leg against Alashkert.

Steven Gerrard‘s side carry a 1-0 lead over to Armenia tomorrow as they bid to qualify for the group stages of the Europa League for the fourth successive season.

According to The Athletic‘s Jordan Campbell, the Gers are forecasting a £14.4million loss this season and may be forced into selling one or two players to balance the books.

It is said the forecast is based on the expectation Steven Gerrard’s side qualify for the Europa League group stages, so failure to do so would almost certainly leave the club in a position where they need to sell one of their big names.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his preview for Thursday night, Campbell said: “It’s is massively important for them.

“It’s vital. European football is a cash generator at the end of the day.

“If they do not qualify then you start to look at their big players and think they will have to sell somebody.

“It could unbalance the squad as well which would be tough.

“If I’m honest though, I fully expect them to get through. It is a hell of a journey but I think they will get through.

“I think the players will step up to the plate on the night. They need to win, it’s as simple as that.”
