Campbell issues emphatic Thomas Tuchel verdict as Chelsea controversy analysed

Kevin Campbell has defended managers Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte following their bust-up at Chelsea on Sunday (14 August).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said the managers do not deserve touchline bans despite the confrontation.

The derby finished 2-2 after a late equaliser from Harry Kane.

Both managers were booked in the second half after Spurs’ first goal.

They were then shown red cards after a handshake at full time ended in a mass confrontation.

As reported by Football.London (14 August), both managers will receive a one-game touchline ban.

When asked if the managers deserved more than that, Campbell told Football Insider: “No, I don’t think so.

It’s a London derby, there’s a lot riding on it. There’s lots between these London teams.

“It’s heat of the moment stuff. Tuchel’s a passionate manager, I believe his team should have won. Conte knows his team got out of jail and he’s happy about it and probably wasn’t happy about the performance.

Chelsea

You’ve got two managers there who wear their heart on their sleeve. I just think this is what makes the game. A little angst on the side, you see it, this is what it means.

I know the referee gave them red cards but I think the referee should really be looking at his own performance opposed to giving out red cards. Where maybe he could’ve given out red cards he maybe didn’t in the game. Chelsea will feel very hard done by and I think Spurs got out of jail.
