Campbell issues ‘massive’ Newcastle claim after confirmed transfer reveal in last 24 hours

Newcastle United’s defence is “a big, big issue” ahead of the January transfer window, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, stressed the importance of Eddie Howe’s side addressing their problems early in the window.

The Magpies are three points from safety after a 4-0 loss against Manchester City at St. James’ Park on Sunday.

It was the third successive Premier League game in which Howe’s side have conceded three or more goals.

Speaking to Sky Sports (19 December), Howe revealed the club are working “behind the scenes” to get “a couple of solutions” through the door next month.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the comments, Campbell said: “January is key for Newcastle.

“It is going to be massive for them. The owners, the manager and the recruitment team have to get it right. They need to get the players they need. They cannot mess around.

“The defence is a big, big issue. They have got players who can score goals and hurt teams but when you concede multiple goals in every game you don’t have a chance. Eddie Howe knows that.

“January cannot come quick enough for them. They have got to get busy early in the window.”

The Magpies have conceded the most goals of any Premier League side this season (41).
