Campbell issues Newcastle United verdict as Fabian Schar controversy analysed

Kevin Campbell has claimed Newcastle United could have been awarded a penalty on Sunday when Man City defender John Stones collided with Fabian Schar.

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker is “happy” that the officials did not penalise Stones, 28, for the incident.

The City centre-half clattered into the back of Schar inside the penalty area in the first half of a thrilling 3-3 draw at St. James’ Park.

Referee Jarred Gillett ruled that the challenge was not worthy of a penalty and VAR official Peter Bankes deemed there to not have been a clear and obvious error from his colleague.

The officials did use VAR later in the match, Gillett overturned a red card brandished to Kieran Trippier after consulting the pitch-side monitor.

When asked by Football Insider if Eddie Howe’s side should have been awarded a penalty in the first half, Campbell said: “If a penalty was given I would understand why.

“The fact of the matter is, Stones is going for the ball and Schar just happens to be there.

“It is a subjective call. It is down to interpretation from the referee and VAR.

“Sometimes there is contact in the box and it is not a penalty. Every time there is contact between two players away from the ball does not mean it is a penalty.

“I am happy with the decision.”
