Campbell issues 'unbelievable' Rodri claim after Man City injury news

Man City have enough strength in depth to handle a long period without Kalvin Phillips, according to Kevin Campbell.

The ex-Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Premier League champions have “unbelievable” players who can rotate with Rodri in the deep-lying midfield position.

As reported by The Athletic‘s Sam Lee (18 September), Phillips is set to undergo surgery on a shoulder problem.

Speaking to club media (18 September), manager Pep Guardiola revealed his frustration with the injury situation.

Guardiola said he “needs” Phillips to be fit as “Rodri cannot play all of the games.”

Rodri has been ever-present for City in both the Premier League and Champions League this season.

When asked by Football Insider if City were lacking cover for Rodri in the absence of Phillips, Campbell said: “It is true, they haven’t got loads of cover.

“Phillips was the perfect replacement who could sit there and do a job.

“Pep Guardiola has got it tough hasn’t he! Look at the squad they have got.

“I am sure [Ilkay] Gundogan could do a job in there. These guys are unbelievable.

“I know that role is key to what City do. They will get around it if they need to rest Rodri.

“Gundogan can sit in there and dictate. He is a top, top player.

“Listen, we cannot be worrying about Man City! If we do we are all in trouble.”
