Mikel Arteta must be given the time to rebuild Arsenal and properly right the wrongs of a disastrous decade of signings.
That is the explosive verdict of ex-Gunners striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about how it has been unravelling in north London for far too long and he expects massive spending in next summer’s window.
Pressure is piling up on Arteta following a wretched start to the season that makes last season’s FA Cup triumph feel a long time ago.
Arsenal’s 1-1 home draw against Southampton on Wednesday night leaves them 15th in the Premier League table with a third of the season completed.
The upcoming January window offers an opportunity for the club to strengthen their playing squad.
“I think there is still the potential to make moves in January but spending big in January is probably out of the question,” Campbell told Football Insider.
“That is something that I think will be done at the end of the season.
“If we are honest as a football club, we have to allow Arteta time to build. Recruitment has been rancid over the last decade and Arteta has only been at the club for a year.
“He has only really had one transfer window. We have to allow him to build.
“If we changed managers at every bump in the road we will never move forward. I totally understand where Edu is coming from.
“Many fans do not like the truth and the truth of the matter is for 10 years Arsenal have been pulling the wool over peoples eyes.
“Now is the moment of truth where we get serious. We have to allow Arteta to build.”
