Campbell shares insight on Sunderland signing Batth

Kevin Campbell has heaped praise on Sunderland newcomer Danny Batth after his arrival from Stoke City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Arsenal striker, who is closely connected to Stoke through his son Tyrese, backed Batth, 31, to succeed on Wearside as “he’s strong, aggressive and experienced.”

On Tuesday (18 January), the Black Cats announced the signing of the centre-half on a free transfer.

Batth put pen to paper on an 18-month contract at the Stadium of Light.

Speaking to club media after his arrival, Lee Johnson revealed that he’s tried to sign Batth twice in the past.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his insight on Sunderland’s new signing, Campbell said: “Batth is a really good player.

“He’s strong, aggressive and very experienced. I think he’ll do well at Sunderland.

“Stoke let him go because there was an opportunity there for him to go and play regular football at a big club. He can get Sunderland promoted this season.

“Stoke obviously got [Phil] Jagielka in. Jagielka is a real quality player who has played at the highest level. Yes, he is older but he has got that experience.

“Stoke would not have let Danny Batth go if they hadn’t got Jagielka in. It’s a move that works for all parties.”

Batth made 13 appearances for the Potters in the 2021-22 campaign.

He is a product of Wolves’ academy.
