Campbell: This is what my ‘friends’ told me happened to Liverpool fans in Paris

Kevin Campbell has slammed the French authorities for attempting to blame the scenes prior to the Champions League final on Liverpool fans.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker revealed his friends informed him of what was happening in real time.

The French police used pepper spray and tear gas on supporters on Saturday 28 May as the Champions League final at the Stade de France was delayed.

French interior minister Gerald Darmanin claimed 30,000 to 40,000 Liverpool fans had turned up with either fake tickets or no tickets at all.

On Friday (3 June), Uefa issued an apology to fans who attended the final and promised an independent review of what went wrong.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the distressing scenes, Campbell said: “Listen, I had friends over there.

“Before the news broke they were saying it was a joke.

“I believe the fans on this one. When mates are saying that what was going on isn’t right you know there’s a problem.

“People were having to wait hours to get into the stadium. It didn’t sound like it was fit for purpose.

“This was all before the game. When you see people being pepper sprayed and tear gassed it doesn’t look good.

“This is the Champions League final. It should have been marshalled properly. I don’t think it was.”
