Campbell: This is who’s to blame at Tottenham for ‘dramatic’ Dele Alli ‘fall’

Jose Mourinho is to blame for the demise of Dele Alli at Tottenham, according to Kevin Campbell.

The ex-Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Mourinho broke the 25-year-old’s confidence when in charge of Spurs between 2019 and 2021.

On Monday (31 January), Tottenham announced Alli had left the club to join Everton in a permanent deal.

According to the BBC (1 February), the two clubs agreed on a deal which could rise to £40million.

Alli failed to establish himself as a key player under Antonio Conte and was therefore deemed surplus to requirements in north London.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of what went wrong for Alli, Campbell said: “I think Mourinho happened.

“Mourinho went in there and for whatever reason, he didn’t take a liking to him. He wasn’t having him.

“When that happens it is a knock to your confidence as a player. Alli was a starter and a regular England international. The fall from grace has been quite dramatic since then.

“He wasn’t given much of a chance under Mourinho and then two new managers have come in quick succession. He’s become a bit-part player and that’s not good for his confidence.

“He needs to know that the manager believes in him and that he’s going to start. Once he gets that, he will put in the performances again. He’s a wonderful player when he’s confident.

“I think Mourinho was the reason for his downfall. He has not bee the same player since.”
