Campbell verdict on Erling Haaland after what he spotted at Man City – ‘it makes no sense’
Kevin Campbell has told Man City to continue playing the ball in behind early for Erling Haaland.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said “it makes no sense” not to play to the 22-year-old’s strengths.
Haaland scored a brace on his Premier League debut as City beat West Ham 2-0 on Sunday (7 August).
The Norway international quickly put the disappointment of the FA Community Shield behind in what was a man of the match performance at the London Stadium.
Speaking to Sky Sports (7 August), City manager Pep Guardiola took aim at the media for their criticism of Haaland’s performance against Liverpool.
Guardiola claimed the striker would now be compared to Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer just days after some said “he could not adapt in the Premier League.”
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Haaland’s start, Campbell said: “Look, it works both aways.
“It takes a bit of time to work it out.
“Haaland wants that ball played in behind early. Other strikers like the ball into feet and whatever. Haaland likes to hunt off the back of the centre-half though.
“It has been a little bit of an adjustment. We all knew it wouldn’t take them long to work it out.

“They have one of the best strikers in the world at the top end of the pitch. If you don’t feed him it makes no sense.
“They will get better as the weeks go by. Once Haaland gets on a roll he will be unstoppable. I have no doubt about that.”
