Campbell 'wowed' by Ismael after 'amazing' West Brom reveal

West Brom manager Valerien Ismael “deserves a lot of praise” for his side’s defensive record this season, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Albion striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is confident of the Baggies bouncing back to the Premier League at the first time of asking if they continue to defend like they have been.

As revealed by Playmakerstats (16th September), only Manchester City were conceding less shots-per-game than Valerien Ismael’s side on average prior to last weekend.

West Brom drew 1-1 at Preston North End on Saturday and conceded eight shots, only marginally more than their previous average. (BBC)

The Baggies defensive record is even more impressive when the injuries to Matt Clarke and Dara O’Shea are taken into consideration.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the stats, Campbell said: “I mean, wow, that’s impressive.

“It’s even more amazing when you think how long Ismael has had to work with that defence.

“If you are not conceding goals you have got a great chance of winning. Ismael is obviously doing a great job.

“Yes, there has been a couple of bumps in the road with recent results but they are still up there. They are still very well placed to go up automatically.

“Listen, they are doing really well. I see a grit and a determination about them which tells me they will likely go up. They are not conceding many which is great.

“Ismael deserves a lot of praise for what he’s done in a short space of time.”
