Graeme Murty: This is what Rangers duo must improve after win v Ross County
Rangers manager Graeme Murty insists the Gers can get Jason Cummings to get “fitter” and “stronger” after watching the striker score his first goal for the club in the 2-1 win over Ross County on Sunday.
Cummings fired low beyond County keeper Aaron McCarey to give the Gers a 2-0 lead late in the second-half before David N’Gog netted a late penalty.
The 22-year-old has made two appearances off the bench since completing a season-long loan move from Nottingham Forest earlier this month – replacing Alfredo Morelos in both games.
Cummings could make his first start for the Gers when they take on Fraserburgh in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup on Wednesday night in a rearranged fixture.
Murty joked that the striker thinks he should be taking penalties and free-kicks and admitted Cummings and fellow new signing Jamie Murphy can improve after a lack of regular football so far this season.
“He thinks he should be taking everything from now on,” smiled Murty. “Penalties, corners free-kicks, goal-kicks, the lot!” Murty said, as quoted by the club’s official website.
“He’s not lacking confidence that’s for sure! He’s a bubbly guy and he is loving life at the moment. I asked him to go and get us a goal, and he went and got us the goal.
“We can get him fitter and we can get him stronger, and we can get Jamie Murphy fitter and stronger.
“These guys haven’t played a lot of football, but we can utilise them more and more, and get them to a better level.
“All of the guys who have enhanced what we are trying to do, they have all been positive and that’s really good for me as a manager now as I have decisions to make.”
The on-loan striker scored four times in 17 appearances for Forest under Mark Warburton but struggled to hold down a regular place in the starting XI and found his chances even more limited when the former Rangers manager was sacked on December 31st and replaced by Aitor Karanka.
Cummings made his Scotland debut in November’s friendly with the Netherlands at Pittodrie.
