‘He can handle himself’ – Foderingham delivers verdict on new Rangers defenders

By Danny Wright

Goalkeeper Wes Foderingham has made it clear that he has complete faith in Rangers’ two new centre-backs Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso.

The Portuguese duo are two of nine new players that have been signed up by manager Pedro Caixinha since last summer and they are expected to start in the heart of the backline for the Light Blues’ Premiership opener against Motherwell on Sunday.

Rob Kieran, Clint Hill and Philippe Senderos has all exited Ibrox this summer, meaning that Foderingham, 26, is facing the prospect of an almost new-look defence in front of him.

Cardoso, 23, arrived from Vitoria Setubal for a fee of £1.3million in June and has already made his competitive debut in the Europa League.

However Alves, 35, came in as a free agent but is yet to feature in a competitive fixture for Rangers as he spent most of the summer away with Portugal at the Confederations Cup.

Fodergingham believes that the two Portuguese centre-backs have exactly what it takes to help Caixinha’s Ibrox revolution become a success.

“He’s [Alves] a lot more cool and calm than I thought he’d be, you can see that from his performances. The boys pick up and feed off that,” said the goalkeeper, as quoted by the Express.

“Fabio Cardoso is obviously younger and he’ll learn a lot from Bruno. I’m sure he’s thrilled to be playing alongside him.

“He’s a dominant force in the air and on the deck he’s really good as well. He can see a pass and he’s a calm presence on the ball.

“I’m sure he can handle himself and pick his moments.”

Rangers will not doubt be hoping to improve on the third placed finish they achieved in their return to the Scottish Premiership last term.

The Light Blues will certainly have one eye on the results from Celtic and Aberdeen as the season progresses as they were the two sides that finished above them last time out.
