'Cannae help themselves' - Rangers fans tear into Sky Sports pundit after bizarre claims

Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to tear into Sky Sports pundit Davie Provan after he launched into a handful of bizarre claims about the Ibrox side in his column for Sun Sport.

The former Celtic star was ridiculed for his claims that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley was the answer to Rangers’ problems; Steve Clarke was a boyhood Celtic fan and that the Gers’ board had “begged” Walter Smith to return.

Gers fans were quick to hammer the pundit for his comments with one calling it “absolute guff.”

Here are some of their comments on Twitter:

Provan also claimed that the Gers team who reached the UEFA Cup final in 2008 were “bang average” despite beating the likes of Fiorentina, Werder Bremen, Lyon and Stuttgart as well as being the only side to keep a clean sheet against Barcelona.

The former Celtic star has really tried to push the “Mike Ashley would have saved Rangers” idea with repeated suggestions in his columns that the retail tycoon was the only way the Gers could get close to Celtic despite the fact Ashley’s hand-picked executives tried to effectively steal money from the club’s youth development company and – until recently – were subject to legal action by the club for breaching their fiduciary duty by entering into a one-sided retail agreement with Ashley’s Sports Direct.
