Darren Bent has been questioning why West Brom midfielder Romaine Sawyers is not playing in the Premier League after impressing in the 1-1 draw with Derby County.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England striker says he cannot believe that the 27-year-old is not plying his trade in the top flight after his performance against the Rams.
Sawyers returned to the Hawthorns this summer after initially leaving the Baggies back in 2013 and has gone straight into the starting XI under Slaven Bilic.
Bent was blown away by what he saw from the former Walsall and Brentford midfielder, insisting he has the qualities to make it among England’s elite.
Asked who stood out in a Baggies shirt against the Rams, Bent told Football Insider: “Romaine Sawyers. He controlled the game, it was so easy for him. I can’t believe this guy’s not playing in the Premier League, especially with his ability on the ball.
“He never, ever gives the ball away, always keeps it ticking over, plays forwards, plays backwards when he has to but is always looking to play forwards. Why he’s not in the Premier League, I don’t get it. He was probably the best player on the pitch.”
Sawyers, who has primarily been used as a central midfielder by Bilic, has played all five of the club’s games in the Championship this season, as well as featuring in the League Cup defeat to Millwall.
He is an experienced operator in the second tier with 131 appearances in the division, although he never played for West Brom’s senior side in his first stint at the Hawthorns.
